Don't eat the Cake!I figure I might as well break my two-month hiatus from the Mishmash with something that is absolutely woeful. My wife is the gatherer of romantic comedy candidates to offset my penchant for “heavier” cinema consumption. I don’t mind that a bit. I like comedy. I like romance. I even occasionally find that the genre combining these two concepts is done exceptionally well. More often, however, the result is simply enjoyable and immediately forgettable. No problem. Then there is a movie like Cake, which is so bad, in just about every category of filmmaking, that both Maggie and I occasionally look over at each other with open mouths and raised eyebrows of disbelief. I have a lot of catching up to do (some 40 films), so I can’t justify more time spent dissecting this dead dog. Some films are so bad they’re good. Not this one. Heather Graham cannot act. The supporting cast is a collection of talentless or miscast players, and the screenplay is dumb, from idea to execution. Even the collection of “bloopers” on the DVD are, astonishingly, not remotely funny. This film should be known by its Italian title, Cacca.

I agree with you! Heather Graham is the worst actress. How does she get film roles?

If I were a cynic, I would suggest to look no further than Ms. Graham’s Roller Girl role in Boogie Nights to find the secret of her success.
