By the time this sci-fi/horror/action mashup made its US theatrical release this past February, its sequel, Day Watch, had been on screens in its native Russia for over a month. Night Watch is the first installment of a trilogy, and the first two films have been cause for talk of a Russian cinematic renaissance, each film having taken an estimated $30M+ in box office receipts, mostly domestic. The film is a veritable visual feast; the camerawork, lighting; effects and editing are all full-throttle. And although the specifics of this good vs. evil vampiresque story are far from compelling, the level of technical craft is astonishing considering its reportedly small budget. Watch the DVD in Russian, because (a) that is what you should always do with live action foreign language films, and (b) the stylistic subtitles serve as the flourish of the creative force behind this film and confirm that the filmmakers are not taking themselves too seriously.
