The doctor is in conflict. What if a therapist’s patient, on the rebound from a bad marriage, begins dating a man 14 years younger who, unbeknownst to her, is the therapist’s son? When the therapist (the tremendously talented Meryl Streep) – a stereotypically protective New York Jewish mom – figures out the identity of the man who the patient (the disappointingly average Uma Thurman) has been gushing about for weeks. This is a concept for a good film, and the result here, while imperfect, is a worthy member of the romantic comedy genre. Streep’s performance, as well as the narrative and comedic goodwill created by the Prime’s imaginative conceit carries the film through the occasional minefield of banal dialog and roughly hewn subplots.
