Full disclosure from the start: I don’t care much for the Farrelly brothers. Yes, There’s Something About Mary was funny. And while low humor may deserve a place among the cinematic traditions, I find I can make it through this rough road called life without the likes of Dumb & Dumber or Me, Myself & Irene to cheer me up. Fever Pitch, however, appeared to be a bit of a departure from the normal Farrelly shtick. Sure enough, it is. Instead of the jokes and the plot being immature, now only the characters are. Although there may be some real people out there who resemble the sports fanatic caricature played by Jimmy Fallon, they — like Fallon’s performance — are probably not very interesting. As for Drew Barrymore, she plays a career-driven smart girl, providing definitive proof that the Farrelly’s don’t know any career-driven smart girls. Given the roles Barrymore inhabits of late, perhaps she should have stopped with E.T. The plot, if you couldn’t guess, involves the romantic intersection of this odd couple. If you are expecting sparks, you’ll be better served with a fork and the nearest electrical outlet.
