Jared Hess created something of a phenomenon with his directorial debut, Napoleon Dynamite. Although I can’t say I was among those Napoleonites who found the film to be a comic revelation worthy of incessant quoting, I found the film’s quirky, irreverent humor to be refreshingly good fun. Sadly, Nacho Libre, proves Hess to be no comic innovator but rather a one trick pony. Substitute setting and context, and we have the same story over again, complete with sidekick. As Nacho, a Mexican monk who cooks meals at an orphanage but yearns to be a professional wrestler, Jack Black does as much as he can. Black is a talented comic actor, and his signature rock riffing three quarters of the way through the picture provides one of the rare moments in which this supposedly comic film generated a genuine laugh.
