1408 (2007)

La La La! Not listening to you! This latest adaptation of a Steven King short story involves – stop me if you’ve heard this one before – a cynical writer who becomes the victim of his own skepticism. John Cusack is well cast as an unflappable author who has written a series of second-rate books about haunted places, yet believes in nothing spiritual or supernatural. His reckoning comes after following a mysterious lead to room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel in Manhattan, which manager Samuel Jackson claims is being kept strictly out of service after having “taken” the lives of dozens of people over several decades. While there is nothing new in seeing Cusack deliver monotone dialog, this role eventually demands a great deal more, and Cusack rises to the occasion. Likewise, what would be an all-too-familiar haunted house story takes a few unexpected, if not contrived, turns. In this era of supposed “torture-porn,” the imagery and frights are well-executed but on the mild side. That’s just fine by me. Unfortunately, if you are expecting the story to reveal something deeper about this room’s existence, your stay in 1408 is likely to be a disappointment.I swear, I didn't order room service.
