Director Guillermo del Toro is a long way toward establishing himself as one of the greatest contemporary storytellers, and this sequel to his 2004 comic book adaptation solidifies his ability to bring his distinctive visual and narrative style to commercial ventures as well his more personal projects. If there is indeed now a Hellboy franchise, this is the more assured and developed of the two films, confident with its pulpy and ridiculous origins and yet evoking layers of subtext and intricately imagined fictional history. It is impossible to imagine anyone better suited to bring this type of material to the screen, just as it will seem like an impossibly long wait before we can see what del Toro can do with Tolkein’s The Hobbit.
