The X-Files television series was a thoroughly enjoyable conceit. The 1998 film was a success because it parlayed the energy of the series and yet embraced the language of cinema. Series creator Chris Carter wasn’t wrong to think that people would want the opportunity to spend more time with Mulder and Scully, but in toying with our expectations, he fails miserably to make the story of their lives in the interim between the series and this movie even remotely believable. To make matters much worse, the story here would have resulted in an ultimately forgettable two-hour television special. (Even the crime that the two uncover should be more horrifying than the film allows.) As a feature film, Carter would have paid more respect to his beloved anti-heroes by allowing them to continue to live in our imaginations.
