Tropic Thunder

January 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

Parody is tough to do well, and the proof of this can be found on several shelves in your local video store (file under Scary Movie).  Tropic Thunder is a ridiculous lark of a film, but a delicious one, to the credit of the vast talent of Robert Downy, Jr. (may he continue to stay out of the way of his own career success) and the surprisingly deft touch and generosity of Ben Stiller, who wears the hats of director, writer, producer, and actor.  There is a lot going on here to contribute to its success, not the least of which is an impressive ensemble of actors. Too much has been made of the hammy turn by Tom Cruise, who takes a few knocks at himself  and the rest of Hollywood, but the real marvel for me is that I thoroughly enjoyed this film despite the fact that Matthew McConaughey appears throughout.tropicthunder
