I am at a loss to fully describe just how utterly awful a film Art School Confidential is. What is more confounding is that, according to the DVD extras, a roomful of sycophants at the Sundance Film Festival actually applauded following the film’s debut screening. There is something incredibly beautiful, though, about the fact that a film with an apparent disdain for the intellectually bankrupt commentary, praise, and criticism in the art world comes packaged on a DVD containing a featurette in which director Terry Zwigoff and his collaborators wax on, spouting unconvincing double-speak about a film that you suspect they all know is the worst thing any of them has done or hopefully ever will do. I can’t justify taking more time to elaborate on how the acting, dialogue, scoring, pace, tone and message are frustratingly poor in both conception and execution, because I’m already annoyed about the time I wasted watching this turkey.
