There is something extraordinary about a well-conceived documentary,
such that what one would merely expect to be the telling of a historic event turns out to be a complex study of human nature, from the ordinary to the pathological. The historic event itself is clearly cinematic: Philippe Petit’s daring high-wire crossing between the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. But as captivating a subject as the crossing is, this film is much more a study of unwavering ambition (and its consequences). It is also the most subliminal 9/11 movie one could ever make. And while Petit and his collaborators have a natural potential energy that would fuel a movie, there is real aesthetic beauty in the detail of director James Marsh’s construction of historical footage, unrelated period footage, reenactment and interview.
