Red Road

redroadNot until the closing credits of Red Road did I realize that the characters of the film were conceived by Dogme stalwarts Lone Scherfig (Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself) and Thomas Anders Jensen (The Green Butchers,as well as the writer of Wilbur and many others). Then I came to learn that the film is another of Lars Von Trier’s experiments, this time for three directors to each make films sharing the same main characters and actors (the second film is currently in production). One can’t help but see the Danish connection to a film in which the main character’s job is to sit in a Glasgow CCTV monitoring station and essentially edit her own Dogme movie from the naturally lit images on the dozens of monitors set before her. Make no mistake, though, the success of the film belongs to its writer/director, Andrea Arnold.  This is the type of storytelling I love, where nothing is explained upfront, and the immediate silent questions about what in unfolding requires the viewer to invest himself in each narrative revelation. Just under the surface of a compelling, at times harrowing, and ultimately satisfying story are a host of thematic explorations, including privacy, criminal rehabilitation, poverty, restorative justice, and social and familial support structures. Also included on the DVD is Arnold’s Oscar-winning live action short, Wasp, which is another example of the director’s true gift for painfully intimate and unsentimental human observation.
