Singin’ in the Rain

singinintherainPrior to today, Singin’ In the Rain was a film I had only seen on television. I’m sure that’s true with most people, unfortunately, even those who are fond of the film. Until seeing it today on the big screen, I would have never guessed what a shame that is. First of all, Singin’ In the Rain is, in my estimation, the biggest if the big production musicals of golden age Hollywood. The enormous technicolor sets and dance numbers suggest a world in which nothing is mundane, and if it is, it is mundane in the largest possible way. And considering the fact that Singin’ In the Rain celebrates cinema with its storyline imagining one studio’s transition into the era of “talkies,” it seems only fitting that it should be experienced exactly as intended. While truly large pictures are still being made on occasion (I’m talking Baz Luhrmann, not Jerry Bruckheimer) I don’t think a film like this could ever make it out of a studio today. But this one did, and it is a treat and a treasure.  I hope for all those who love cinema that this particular showcase for Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds gets a cinematic re-release someday soon.
