In Brendan Fraser, the producers of Journey to the Center of the Earth must have been looking for someone
who wouldn’t distract from the real star of the film: the multitude of special effects shots. In fact, Fraser’s acting style could very well be computer generated, making him seem right at home among the subterranean rocks through which his professor character, the professor’s nephew (Josh Hutcherson) and their Icelandic guide (Anita Briem) travel. Hoping that Jules Verne’s text would help them find the hidden world described therein (and Fraser’s long-lost brother), the three set out on the most improbable path into terra firma.
As ridiculous and forgettable popcorn flicks go, this one is perfectly fine. Apparently it is so perfectly fine, in fact, that a sequel is in the works. Perhaps the next time around the stakes can be raised ever to slightly, so that we genuinely believe that all of the stuff flying around might actually put the characters in peril.
