Now being half-way through the expanded (original) version of John Woo’s historical epic, I have no doubt that, despite really liking the pared-down “theatrical” version of the film I first saw at the past year’s Chicago International Film Festival, this original, five-hour version of the film is the only form that should ever be seen. If the purpose for the shorter version, and it’s heavily narrated opening montage, was to clarify the story and characters for an ignorant western audience, it seems nothing short of a failure compared to the experience of the original, long cut of the film. Sometimes, bigger is better.
